Top 5 qualities to look for in a doula

Happy October everyone!

It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog post.

I hate forcing myself to write when I don’t feel inspired. Especially when it’s supposed to be an educational or supportive thing I’m writing- I want what I say to be genuine and from my heart.

If I can’t make it genuine, I don’t write. But I’m feeling inspired lately! So here we go:

Top 5 Things To Look For in a Birth Doula

1. They service your area.

I know, it seems super obvious to say this one. But just because a doula lives in your general area or used to service your area doesn’t mean they’ll come to your address, or the place you’re giving birth. So before you get excited about hiring them or sign a contract, make sure they can come to where you need them!

Speaking of contracts…

2. They have a contract.

Contracts protect you and the doula. They lay out clear expectations and are a useful tool when you need to communicate an issue or have questions. If the doula you’re talking to doesn’t have a contract, that should give you pause!

3. They’re priority is to support you, not their agenda.

Everyone has different opinions on birth, postpartum and how it’s supposed to be- and the thing about opinions is that they vary from person to person. You want to look for someone who supports you in YOUR priorities, and won’t push their opinions onto you. Which leads me into number 4…

4. They align with your desires for your birth.

You want a hospital birth with an epidural? Or maybe you want a home water birth with a midwife? Or maybe you want a scheduled c-section? Or you want to use a birth center? Whatever you decide for your birth, look for a doula who’s expertise and passion is in the kind of birth you want. And yes, there’s a doula out there for your specific needs!

5. They are upfront about their fees.

Find someone who is very upfront and honest about what they charge. Having a baby is a big, overwhelming thing and the last thing you need is an unexpected fee coming up when you’re trying to get ready for birth! Again, having a contract is great for this. All the pricing should be clearly outlined in there!

Stay tuned for next week, where I’ll share the top 5 things to look for in a postpartum doula!
